TonalEnergy Voice Pitch

I use the tone generator in TonalEnergy as a drone to sing intervals against. The problem is TE indicates that I am singing a half step flat. For example, if C3 is the drone, my voice registers Eb3. It registers E3 at the piano, so there is something about the quality of my voice that causes it register low. I have to sing F3 to get E3. Does anyone else have this problem? Could it be something about the mic on my iPad Pro that causes this response? Is there a work around?

Re: TonalEnergy Voice Pitch

Hi Stephanie,

The TonalEnergy folks suggested that this problem is caused by ambient sounds (including the drone itself) picked up by the regular microphone of my iPad. They suggested that I use ear buds with a built-in microphone to minimize background sounds.

Are you working through W. A. Mathieu's Harmonic Experience?

Yes, if you aren't using earphones of some kind for the drone, then the tuner can pick it up along with your voice and interfere with the tuning results -- especially if you are singing non-unison intervals. You might prefer to use just one earbud in so you can hear your own voice better.

Re: TonalEnergy Voice Pitch

Hi, thank you both for your replies.
I sing with an acapella chorus and have only just downloaded TE, so just getting to grips with it.
All I am doing is playing a note e.g. C (not sustained so no drone being picked up)... and then singing the C to see if I can get a smiley face. I just don't seem to be able to maintain the smiley face.. it just flickers on and off. It says I'm singing a C.. but to get the smiley face.. I have to adjust my note so that it feels like I'm sharping the note.

... I have not heard of W A Mathieu's Harmonic Experience... I will google it!

Re: TonalEnergy Voice Pitch

We are finishing up a big update to the iOS app that includes among other things a voice-specific mode. In the meantime you may want to go into the Prefs and set Response Speed to slow which really helps when using the tuner for voice. Also, you may want to set skill level to Intermediate which makes the "smiley face" range wider than the other settings. Those skill modes were really targeted toward orchestral wind purposes and not human voice so don't feel insulted by the terminology!

Ok... I fear I may be about to make myself look stupid.... but I can't find 'preferences' on my app... in fact... I can't find much of what you talk about in your instruction manual. Could it be that as I have downloaded it onto my Samsung phone, I don't have access to as much stuff??

Be gentle with me!

Yes, sorry I saw the reference to the iPad in the first post, but that wasn't you!  The Android version is a bit different and the documentation doesn't match it exactly, but for the items I mentioned not much is changed.  You should still see a Prefs tab at bottom right, and a Response Speed item in the General tab in there. And on the main Tuner page there is Skill button in the lower right side, which is probably already set to Intrmd.

Me again.... I think I have cleared up confusion - I have a couple of friends who have also downloaded this app on their I phones and they have all of the tabs you mention (preference response speed etc etc), sadly, mine which I downloaded on my Samsung has very little. Certainly no preference in the bottom right corner or anywhere else! Along the bottom of my screen I have Tuner, Sounds, Metro and Analysis.

I think I know what's going on, you have a smaller screen device and the last tab is getting cut off... do you see some little ... in the lower right corner? Try pressing over there and you may get a little popup allowing you to select the Prefs. What device do you have, by the way?

Re: TonalEnergy Voice Pitch

Hi, I have a Samsung SM G357FZ.
There seems to be a little plus sign in the bottom right hand corner, but pressing on that does nothing I'm afraid.

Another question (for if I ever get this working!).
My chorus and/or quartet would like to use this app to let us know when we had 'dropped' or 'flattened' the key we were singing in..
what is the best way to do this?

Re: TonalEnergy Voice Pitch

The voice mode on the iOS version of the app does not do anything really special, it only slows down the response speed and widens the "in-tune" range. You can use the current version of the Android tuner with your voice no matter what setting it is on. As mentioned above, we do recommend setting the response speed to slow in the Prefs tab, and the skill level to intermediate. In a coming update, the Android version will match the features of the iOS version.

Re: TonalEnergy Voice Pitch

No, you'll probably just keep that on Equal Temperament unless you have a good reason to change it.
